THE TRUE VALUE OF HANDMADE

In today's world of mass production and instant gratification, handmade products often stand out as treasures. From intricately woven textiles to hand-carved wooden sculptures, these items possess a unique charm that sets them apart from their factory-made counterparts. However, along with their beauty and individuality comes a price tag that may initially seem steep to some. So, why exactly are handmade products so expensive?

The first thing to consider is time and skill. One of the primary reasons handmade products command a higher price is the amount of time and skill invested in their creation. Unlike machines that can churn out thousands of identical items in a matter of minutes, artisans spend hours, days, or even weeks crafting each piece by hand. Whether it's the delicate stitching of a quilt or the meticulous shaping of pottery, the expertise and attention to detail required are invaluable. Here is an example of how many creators price items:

  • Cost of supplies + $$ per hour time spent = Price A

  • Cost of supplies x 3 = Price B

  • Price A + Price B divided by 2 (to get the average between these two prices) = Price C

For example, the picture featured in this blog took about 30 hours to fully complete. Its finished size (not including the fringe) is 54x44". I would charge $10-12/hour for my time. The yarn cost $4.99/skein, and I used seven skeins. So, here's how that would calculate out:

  • $4.99 x 7= $34.93 | $11 x 30= $330

    • $34.93 + $330= $364.93

  • $34.93 x 3= $104.79

  • $364.93 + $104.79 / 2= $234.86

Total: $235

Secondly, many artists and crafters opt for higher quality materials. Artisans often prioritize sourcing materials that are sustainable, ethically produced, and of superior quality. While these materials may come with a higher price tag, they result in a final product that not only looks better but also lasts longer. Investing in quality materials ensures that the item will stand the test of time, making it a worthwhile purchase in the long run.

Finally, the uniqueness of products vary from item to item. When I crochet my classic striped blanket, it is one of a kind. No two will ever be alike. It is not just the differences in color selection, but the variations of strips. Factory produced products do not take individuality into consideration. It is more about quantity, not quality or uniqueness. This limited availability adds to the perceived value of the product, as consumers are willing to pay a premium for something that is unique and hard to come by.

While handmade products may come with a higher price tag, they offer a level of quality, craftsmanship, and individuality that simply cannot be replicated by mass-produced goods. By understanding the time, skill, and resources that go into creating handmade items, consumers can better appreciate their true value and feel confident in investing in products that are not only beautiful but also meaningful. So the next time you're tempted to balk at the price of a handmade treasure, remember that you're not just buying a product – you're investing in artistry, quality, and uniqueness.
